Jason,
In general, tire life is less due to BRAND than the TYPE of tire you get. Most brands offer different types. Sportier tires tend to be softer and wear faster. For longer life you should select a tire that has a longer tread wear rating (i.e., a harder compound). Trade-offs include less traction and higher noise. I just purchased a set of Yoko AS430 for my girlfriends CIVIC and they appeared to be a good compromise between hard and soft (rated at 60,000 mi tread wear). The guy at the tire store is probabaly right though, because most SAAB drivers probably drive more aggressive than average thereby shortening the life of any tire. I think anything more than 40k and you'd have a very noisy tire without good traction (just a hunch).
