cold start problems - 9-3

Cold morning (- 14 C) went to start my 2005 9-3 arc. It started but was shaking, shuddering and banging like an off balance washing machine with blue smoke out the tail pipe. Never had anything remotely similar on this car or any others I have owned. Had it towed to the dealer service. Conclusion was that the computer had fed the engine rich the cold night before when I was out for a short spin and the cylinders still had excess gas in them when I started the next morning, but the computer wouldn't know that and sent a rich gas mix again to the engine flooding it out.
I would have thought that a car from arctic Sweden would at least have a sensor to feed back info on the state of the gas that may have remained in the cylinders to prevent flooding? Dealer replaced the plugs and all seems ok but he did mention that they have seen problem with this engine.
I don't understand the fact that in all the many cars I have owned from Japanese manufacturers and from Volvo as well, I never had to drive the car for at least ten minutes when cold, in order to burn off any excess gas that was injected at cold start in order to avoid a flood condition such as I experienced.
Is the Saab 9-3 engine control system/computer not up to it?
The suspension also does not much like the cold weather- protests with considerable noise- booming and clatter for a good 10 - 15 minutes. What gives- is the 9-3 down spec'd for the North American market? Is it poor engineering or Detroit bean counter's heavy hand?
