My 2003 9-3 done the exact same thing at roughly the same milage interval. The problem only gets worse. I am not sure what the exact name of the part is, but it is the fuel level sensor in your gas tank that has gone out. I'm not sure of the exact mechanism of how it works, but the sensor has little teeth that move with your fuel level. Over time they wear out and the sensor has to be replaced. If you are very good with mechanics, you could try and replace it yourself, but I do know it involves alot of work. As you know, a saab is not an easy car to work on. The labor involves dropping your fuel tank and some disassembly is required of you exaust pipes. Also, there is a plastic coupler between your fuel tank and fuel lines. DO NOT break that piece in the disassembly because if you do, you have to buy a whole new fuel line (according to my mechanic). The sensor is only about 30 dollars, but it takes a little over 3 hours of labor to do the job by the dealer. You are looking at about 350 dollars to get it replaced by a saab dealer which is the route I took. The 2003 model has alot of little quarks about it, which is consistant because most times a car company changes body styles, the first year model is somewhat trial and error. I hope this helps you out.
