The AM antenna is actually built into the radio, for the most part. The external antenna installed on vehicles is specifically for FM frequencies only and is not designed to receive AM frequencies. An FM antenna is usually a single straight "whip" that ends, an AM antenna is usually a "loop" or coil design. One reason on higher end home receivers you have a separate AM and FM antenna connection is because there are two different types of antenna. Now maybe Saab has designed their antenna to somehow work with AM, I don't know. But you might want to do a little more research before you go through all this trouble for nothing. Or at least get some type of assurance that if these repairs don't solve your issue your not out a whole lot of money. Of course it might just be the radio itself, may not be designed to receive AM signals very well. Most of the time they are not. In that case a new antenna won't be very helpful.
