2000 Saturn L Series... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What is the origin of the 2.0 L engine in '07 9-3, JohnA ![]() ![]() |
One of the first applications of the Ecotech 4 was the Saturn L series in 2000. Also right along there came Cavaliers and Sunbirds with the new engine. It's a very robust block to keep the vibrations down. The Saturn version was 2.2 liters and was every bit as smooth and powerful as the Honda/Toyota motors.
It's the world motor GM designed to compete with Honda Accord and Camry fours. Aluminum block, DOHC, twin balance shafts, direct ignition, quite a bit smoother than the Ricardo based Saab engines. GM makes it in a bunch of different places in a bunch of different displacements, with turbo and normally aspirated.
When Saab got the engine in 2003 they designed their own cylinder head to go with Saab Trionic Engine Management.
I see the same engine in the Soltice/Sky turbo'd at 2.4 liters I believe with direct injection and 250+ hp.
