I've got a 2006 9-3SC and I had to change my rear brake pads at 22,000 miles. I checked the fronts at the same time and they look like new, so I think the rears are going to have to be changed several times before the fronts need it. According to the WIS, new disc thickness is 12MM and the wear limit is 10MM. Mine both measured 11.074MM and since I did not have any vibration while braking, I figured I could just change the pads this time and do both the pads and the rotors next time. I opted for EBC Greenstuff pads at a total cost of $59. (shipping was free) The only catch is the special tool needed to screw in the pistons. I already had a universal tool that I bought about 15 years ago, but none of the adapters that it came with fit the Saab pistons. I ended up making an adapter at work, but you can probably rent one as JamesS-S mentioned. The actual job of replacing the pads was very easy; maybe an hour and a half for both sides and that's with being pretty meticulous about cleaning and lubing everything along the way. I've only got about 1,000 miles on the new pads, but so far it feels like new; smooth and quiet, and a bit less dust to boot. Next time, I may opt for the Redstuff pads (ceramic, almost no visible dust). I thought the Redstuffs might be too agressive on 1/2 worn rotors; that's why I passed on them this time. I was looking for a cheap fix and I have no regrets thus far.
