Slap shifting is fun and easy Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Auto vs. 5-Speed: Fun Factor, nickh360, Fri, 29 Feb 2008 18:46:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 9-3SS has a cool slap shifter that allows quite a bit of manual control, all without a clutch pedal.. Itsa' trade off, you lose a little control and satisfaction, but you can still shift very conveniently, whereas you can indeed leave it in D for the traffic. Thatsa' compromise that works for many, many, many die hard stick drivers. It doesn't matter so much about shifting, especially when you can still do it well, it's more about the D in traffic.
My shift brain is wired to my right hand, not my fingertips, so steering wheel paddling always feels artificial. Slapping the shifter feels pretty normal.
On my visit to Australia there are almost no sticks because Australians are spoiled by big sixes and V8's that pretty exclusively come with autos
It would be nice if Saab had a rev matching or throttle blipping program in the software for downshifts like some brands, but that's just another opportunity to exercise some manual control and the torque converter sucks up the jolt pretty well anyway.
