Cannot answer that both, because I have not done it and, it is illegal since you are tampering with an emission related system.
If Saab comes out with a recall thing that deletes the system, than it is ok.
I also don't know if it is possible to code an 04 T8 box to an 03 car.
It might completely refuse when trying to code it since the hardware and software inside is not recognized as the right year.
It is more limitations on swapping ECUs around in today's cars using a Network system since all components needs to be recognized and added to the Network. Most of the time it has to be done using the Tech 2 scanner so then you are in the mercy of a mechanic that is willing to tinker on a trial and error basis and a customer willing to pay hour for hour the time it take even if at the end it is impossible and the old parts needs to be re installed.
