Windshield Wipers Stuck in Vertical

Hi there,
I was driving home, and the wipers of my 2006 Sport Combi were just fine. They were set in "intermittent." Suddenly, instead of going back to the home (horizontal) position, they just stopped dead in the middle of the windshield.
When I put them into low speed, they worked fine, going through the whole range of motion. When I turned them off, they stopped in the middle again.
I put them back into intermittent. With each pass, they stopped a little bit more towards full vertical. Note, I'm driving through this insanity!
Anyway, I got home, turned the car off for a bit hoping that when I restarted it, something would reset itself. Nothing.
I noticed in the owner's manual that you can set the wipers to stop in the vertical position and when you restart the car, they would return to the normal home position. I did that, again nothing. So, the car right now is sitting with the wipers at attention...full vertical.
Anyone have a clue as to what is wrong?
Thanks.
