Technically, letting a transmission add to the deceleration of your car is not harmful. even in a modern auto transmission, the gears and other internal parts are designed to take as much torque and stress when applied via the output shaft as from the input. Autos simply cannot give you as much engine braking due to the torque converter slip, but you will not harm one by downshifting. As a practical matter, usually the reason you bought the auto was to get away from doing that in the first place. I plan on going back to a stick for my next car for a variety of reasons, but engine braking is one key one, as well as a definite extension of brake life. The number of unexplained gearbox failures, both manual and auto, is miniscule , but the number of pad and rotor changes is increasing due to thinner rotors which cost and weigh less. A typical cost of full brake work per axle is approx $500 dollars, and if you have to do them at 30-40 K mile intervals( also very common today),brake system expenses can start to add up. I see no reason why the transmisison and engine cannot shoulder some of the load.
