Saabs have used single row timing chains on each and every 4 in-line cylinder engine since 1981. There was a problem with accelerated chain wear in the early 1990s balance shaft engines which was completely solved by changing suppliers. Quarter-million to half-million miles with no chain failure are common. So are failures caused by negligent maintenance practices.
I would not extrapolate the experience with Mercedes engines to Saab. A 6 cylinder engine has 50% more load on the chain. Further, the 9-3SS with roller cam followers has substantially less load on the chain than the earlier Saab engines. Also, the tensioner that Saab uses makes it very easy to measure chain wear.
BTW, the V-6 uses the so-called silent chain rather than a roller chain.
