Decker,
You might be interested to know that SAAB rotated the engine 180 degrees (or at least redesigned) for the 03 and later 9-3 so that the exhaust manifold exits from the rear of the engine and no longer loops around the front, then under and "through" the oil pan. Did the prior design cause the sludge problem? I don't know but I do know that excessive heat can cause oil to burn and leave deposits and exhaust manifolds are really hot so 2 + 2 would suggest that its probably not a good idea to run a manifold through a U shaped oil pan (can't think of a better way to TRY and overheat the oil really). Not to mention that non-syn oil starts to degrade above 250 deg F so its a good idea to keep it below that temp in the pan so it can effectively lubricate the engine as designed. Toyota camry and Lexus cars also had a manifold out the front and under engine design and also had sludge problem. Maybe not the sole cause but logic at least points to this design as not being the best way to go. Given a choise, I would opt for the vehicle w/o the exhaust pipe going through the oil pan (and I did).
