Having driven this car for 2 1/2 years so far, this is my assessment: Love to drive the car. Still enjoy getting the turbo into 3rd(I have the auto shifter), and cruising in the 70-90 range is great. I still love its classic good looks and always get comments asking me how I like the car as it still isn't that common in NYC. Love the look of the interior and the green lights at night always get comments and I love the Night Display. Great trunk room and with the seats down its really convenient, although the rear deck gets in the way sometimes. gas mileage is fine, and I haven't had any mechanical problems other than some type of emmissions leak that made me fail an inspection last year(warranty stuff).
I hate the P6 Pirelli tires though. I have had 5 different slow leaks at one time or another in multiple tires, I guess they are very soft or something, and the wet handling is a little slippery. Tire shop owners always tell they suck as well. No electrical problems other than the locks sometimes going up and down(not often) and the trunk button on the remote sometimes doesn't deactivate the alarm and it goes off when lifting the truck lid. Minor details. Love the deep glove box and the pockets in the front and back of the seats. However the seat leather feels a bit cheap, almost like leatherette, but very comfortable. Great heated seats as well. Horrible stereo that we all know and hate, although the iPod aux is handy.
Biggest complaint for me has been the noisy, cheap interior materials. Can't get past it. In the winter it creaks, not so much rattles. creaks from the air vents, creaks from the dashboard above the steering wheel, squeaks from the leather seats rubbing against the cheap plastic by the seat controls, creaks from the rear deck. You can push on the dashboard plastic lightly with your hand and it creaks like an old rocking chair. Somewhat embarassing when you have people say, ooo a saab this is different and cool, and then they sit in my car and its creaking like the wood floors in a old house. I try to keep the radio turned up so I don't hear it. Even worse than my old 2000 Hyundai Tiburon i used to own. Same dashboard materials and I hope they have improved on that. I only have 15,000 miles on this car, it is like brand new and I hate giving it back to the dealer without a scratch and barely any miles on it. Barely drive it as I take the subway into manhattan for work.
Anyway I am looking for new cars, and will probably look into the 08/09 saab 9-3 or sportcombi(although unless i get a good deal I am not interested with this creaky car), the Audi A3(maybe A4 when I see the redesign for 09, cause i think the current one is ugly), the Infinity G35, the VW GLI, The Suburu XT something or other, maybe the Cadillac CTS. I currently pay 420/mth for a 42 month lease and really don't want to pay much more because I dont drive that much. plus I get get a car any bigger as I have a one car garage that fits this car perfectly. I would get another Saab because I do like the looks and the way it drives, and could overlook the creaks if i get a good deal with NAV and fully loaded for similar. Any thought about the 08/09 and/or the other cars I discussed or that may be in my range?
