I to considered going K&N on my 9-3 but choose to go OEM because of the reasons you mentioned above. I was looking for more hp out of my car and K&N seemed like a great easy cheap way to do it (all of which are very good things to a college student budget like mine) but the car just will not have it. I posted a thread concerning getting more hp out of my car and the concensus was to use a chip. I believe BSR PPC was what everyone reccomended. Another reason I chose not to go with an upgraded air filter is because the car is a turbo. If it were NA and air was just flowing in, the K&N would make a lot of sense. But, by using the turbo the engine gets plenty of air. Flow should not be a problem. Also, the cars million sensors will tell it the proper fuel/air mixture. Meaning, it does not matter how easily the car can get air because it is going to restrict the amount the turbo pushes. My advice would be to find a chip that will work with your fuel/air mixture and go from there. But, as I always say, I am no mechanic but that seems to make perfect sense to me.
