Vented rotors, just as the name suggests, use air to cool them down through the channels inside the body of the rotor. If you look at the vented rotors from the edge they will look like two parallel plates connected together with metal standoffs.
If your car has vented rotors use the same type as solid rotor does not cool down as efficiently as vented one. As the rotor and pads heat up the braking efficiency will be reduced (unless you are running race brake pads that only work when they are hot). If you had solid rotors to start with you can "upgrade" to vented ones.
I would suggest not cutting corners with brakes as they are the main thing keeping you safe.
