I believe Saab does offer a diesel in Europe. Perhaps if diesels take off in the U.S., GM will bring it to our side of the pond. The success of the upcoming Acura TSX diesel will be a rough guide for Saab's potential with diesel.
More generally, the fuel economy of the 9-3 Aero, with or without XWD, is disappointing. I'm surprised Saab couldn't wring more out of it, considering the reasonable displacement and Saab's sophisticated fuel management. But it's typical for a high performance V6. If I went the Aero route, I'd get XWD because the performance is easily worth the slight mileage penalty. (I've driven the XWD Aero, and it's excellent.) Besides, I bet I'd get tolerable numbers, because most of my driving is on the highway. But I'd miss the 30+ I get with my 2001 9-5 Aero.
