Saab USA has promised Euro Delivery program in '09 Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 29 May 2008 04:32:17 In Reply to: Saab USA has suspended Euro delivery program, rpg, Wed, 28 May 2008 09:11:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The SaabUSA website states the Euro Delivery program will again be available for purchase of 2009 vehicles. Does that mean start of 2009 production, start of 2009 calendar year, or some other point during the 2009 production run?
Find a Dealer who has prior experience with the Euro Delivery method and ask if they have received updated information. If this program is reactivated with start of production, the US Dealers would need the special forms fairly soon.
In the past, a customer desiring this delivery method would order a car at their local Dealer and start looking for cheap air fare. Delivery was typically 6 to 8 weeks after date of order. Thirty days before the car's build date, Saab notified the purchaser of the actual production date and the purchaser had to Pay In Full for the car. The buyer then scheduled a delivery date - paying particular attention to avoid weekends and European holidays - and booked their travel. Saab provided one free night of lodging at a luxurious Bed & Breakfast type hotel close to Trollhattan, and a $2,000 voucher towards other travel expenses.
The purchaser took delivery of their car at any one of ~dozen different European cities, and could drop off the car at any of another list of sites for shipment back to the US. A few sites are free, most have an extra charge. Auto insurance and registration to legally drive your car throughout Europe for vacation/touring is provided for a reasonable extra charge - for up to 2 years!
After being dropped off for return delivery to the US, the car was shipped directly to the buyer's local dealer and arrived 6 to 8 weeks later.
The price of cars delivered in this manner was less than the discounted price paid by GM employees when buying Saabs! This porgram offered the lowest possible purchase price, one night of lodging in Sweden, and a $2,000 travel voucher! The downsides were: paying in full for your car 30 days before receipt; waiting another 6 to 8 weeks after your return from Europe to take delivery of your car for a second time; and, no US sales incentives (rebates) apply.
I seriously considered this method 2-1/2 years ago when buying a 9-3SC but eventually opted for local purchase when US sales incentives were boosted, making the cost advantage negligible.
