Others report better performance with premium gas, which is 91-93 octane in the US (in some countries, a slightly different octance scale is used, add about 5 to the US scale).
The current 9-3SS "recommends" 90 octane fuel. Is this where the maximum performance is obtained? If so, getting higher octane is a waste.
One can "make" 90 octane by diluting 91-93 octane with 87. In areas of the country with 93 octane, you can mix 1:1 87 and get 90. In areas with 91 octane, it's almost not worth the trouble. With 92 octane, 60% premium added to 40% 87 is 90 octane. If premium costs 12 cents more per gallon, that's a 8.8 cent savings.
So the question is whether any octane over 90 is a waste of money?
