I have a 2008, and disagree about the ergonomics of the A/C controls.
I never drove the earlier version of the 9-3 Sport Sedan, but have had several other Saabs, all of which had the push-button style of A/C controls. When I first saw the new style controls on the 9-3, I was disappointed. I thought they were too mainstream or too "GM."
But once I got my new car, I really came to like the new A/C controls. They are MUCH easier to use while driving. It is so easy to make adjustments by feeling for a knob and turning it. It doesn't require me to take my eyes off the road. And the size of the numbers is no big deal -- you soon learn intuitively the position for your normal temperature (say, "68" or "70") and only need to glance down at the dial to see where the indicator is pointing. Once you are familiar with the car, there is no need to read the numbers.
I also find them very easy to reach.
I have a couple of relatively minor gripes, though: It is hard to distinguish the seat heater, a/c off, and rear defrost buttons by feel. And because when the headlight (xenons, if not all models) switch is in the "auto" position, the dashboard lights are not illuminated until you put the car into gear. This means that the indicator on the temperature dial remains dark until you put the car in gear, making it hard to adjust the temp if you are parked in a dark place.
I agree about the awful chrome surround strip on the dash edge. I can't believe they did that.
