Roger, I went through a long, painful discussion with SAAB-GM when we took delivery of our 9-3 wagon in October 2007. The car did not come with roof rails. Both the dealer and SAAB-GM said that roof rails were not available for pre orpost-purchase installation. I was told that roof rails had to be installed as part of the manufacturing process. To further aggravate matters, if one wants to install a roof rack on a car without factory rails, the user must purchase SAAB-GM's proprietary towers. Neither Yakima nor Thule USA carries any towers to fit the SAAB.
I thought that the explanations I received were empty excuses, and that the dealer and SAAB-GM simply wanted me to go away.
I was thrilled when I received a catalog of SAAB accessories that included roof rails for purchase. This was the first I had seen of the roof rails. In fact, the SAAB USA web site lagged behind the accessories catalog in listing the roof rails.
This is a long way of saying that the information in your post is news to me, and that I was unable to find any information to that effect on any web site or in any discussions with the dealer or SAAB-GM during and after my purchase of the car. SAAB-GM couldn't even quote me any size specs on the proprietary roof racks they had on the SAAB USA web site. How bad is it when a SAAB-GM customer service rep cannot or will not find reference information on the length of roof rack crossbars they sell? Idjits!
My conclusion is the SAAB-GM doesn't know diddleysquat about roof rails, roof racks, and cargo carrying systems for vehicles. And they don't care to deal with customers who want to use cargo cargo carrying systems to transport bikes, skis, snowboards, canoes, kayaks, or other outdoor gear.
