After having been given the all clear by a mechanic who deals strictly with Saabs we are now the proud owners of a 2004 9-3 Arc. It is Glacier Blue - not my colour of choice if I was buying new but beggars cant be choosers - has 30000 miles on the clock, a manual transmission and is fully loaded. It also has a beautiful set of 17inch alloys that, I am sure, were standard equipment on the 2006 9-3 Aero. Took her out for a long drive yesterday evening and managed 28mpg around town which is actually 3mpg better than the car I got rid of, a Ford Focus with 80bhp less. Go figure.
First impressions? The steering has very little feel which is gonna take a bit of getting used to but the handling MORE than makes up for it. The car isnt overly quiet but with Pirelli Rosso tires, and their associated performance, I dont expect it to be. Anyone familiar with the road up to Cypress Bowl here in Vancouver Canada must know of those hairpin turns? Well, remember the cartoon Saab had when the 9-3SS first came out. That was me. This car handles better than my brothers Mini Cooper and he agreed!
This is the beginning of a love story for me but I am aware that I do need to keep cash aside for those 'quirks'. Hey, if I want reliable Id buy Japanese but I tell ya what I wouldnt be having nearly as much fun!
Paul :)
