My wife went to put the top down on our 04 ARC Conv and as the front of the top was passing over her, she was showered with hydroilic oil. Not happy!! I tried to complete the top down with rags wipping up the oil, but the top stopped and I had to hand it into the trunk. I took the two pieces of covering that exposed the hydroilic ram that operates the locking hooks and saw the problem. That area was soaked with oil.
I removed the ram and called the dealer for a replacement. Bad news and then more bad news, first it cost $524 and second it would take 7 weeks to get one because of back order. (has to tell you something) This ram is a sealed unit, so I chucked it up in my friends lathe and took the crimp off the back to remove the back plug that held the "O" ring seal.
The seal was ovious not compatible with hydroilic oil and had deterated and let oil pass and was comming out the hole in the back where the pivot pin is. I took the ram to my local hardware store and matched a neopreem "O" ring and the guy wanted to give me the ring because too much trouble to write up a receit for $.25, but I gave him a quarter anyway.
Back home, reassembled, tested many times and no leaks. Now, what do do?
This is a ovious problem with bad results. How many wifes or guys have been showered with oil, what if it would have gotten into my wife eyes?
I saved the old "O" ring. Who makes these rams for Saab? Are my other rams going to go bad?
My conv top is discolored and may never be the same.
Dealer told me tough luck!!
I would very much appreicate all of you guys to chine in on this and let me know what you guys would do. Thanks in advance.
