I am not familiar with the internals of the Aisin-Warner automatics on our Saabs, but have a passing familiarity with automatic tranmisisons. There are three common types of clutches used in automatic trannys: Band clutches, plate clutches, and roller/sprag clutches.
A failed clutch drum will result in loss of the hydraulic pressure which actuates the plate clutch(es) operating internal to the drum. Failed seals are more common than a cracked drum, but an unwanted hole anywhere in the hydraulic circuit is still a hole that will lose pressure and cause the clutch(es) to slip.
The direct drum is undoubtedly the drum which contains the direct clutch, used for the 1:1 ratio.
