If you are describing it that way, for sure you're talking automatic transmission. In 2003 I participated in the Convertible Press Launch, where they had both 9-3 convertibles and 9-5 "Arc" models. This was the 2004 Arc, with the 2.3 HOT engine, detuned to something like 220 hp and 240 ft.lb. Now, the 9-3CV weighs about the same as a 9-5 Wagon, and a standard shift 9-3 would flat out walk away from an automatic 9-5, and on a tight, twisty course, would walk awaw from any 9-5. If you find the 9-3 sluggish, I'd suggest either pushing down the "S" button as soon as you get into the car, or using the shift override feature.
Now, that said, the 9-5 kombi is far more useful than the 9-3 in terms of hauling. Although the 9-3 has nearly the same cargo space, it's shorter, (a lower floor increases the measured cargo volume) and the flip/fold feature of the 9-5 yields a truly flat floor. Plus the seat cushions in the 9-5 are removeable, which yields that extra little bit of cargo space. Also the 9-5 features cargo tracks (even more useful in the 2005 and earlier models), higher towing capacity, and more rear seat room. The 9-3 has much more sporty handling, however.
