Did they do the update to the hoses that go to the expansion tank? There is a service bullitin for that. When we do the service bullitin with new hoses and expantion tank, we also replace the cap. Also for 2008 Aero there is a bullitin to update the engine contol module software. The new software version runs the cooling fans a little longer after the car is shut off. I think on these Aero V-6 cars, when its shut off the temp may increase enough that some of the coolant gets pushed out the expansion tank overflow tube. These engines run at very high temperatures and having the turbo right next to the expansion tank doesn't help the situation.
Here's what the e-mail says from SAAB
Date: May 12, 2008
Subject: Cooling Fan run time
Models:
2008 9-3 Aero models
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Note: this s/w update ONLY pertains to MY 2008 models. There currently is no s/w update for 2006-2007.
CONDITION/CONCERN:
A customer may comment that a LOW COOLANT message is shown on SID
RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:
If a condition of leaking coolant expansion tank is found on a 9-3 Aero with V6 engine, in addition to replacing the tank and performing the hose connection changes as described in TSB 260-2695, update ME9 engine management software using Tech2 version 135.000 or later.
This softward update increases the cooling fan run time to further cool down the underhood temperature in extreme conditions.
I hope this information helps you
