Gas lines freeze because water can collect in the bottom of fuel tanks, and if pumped into the fuel lines, the water wil freeze. The old remedy was to pour a can of "Dry Gas" in your fuel tank ocassionally. This product was effectively pure alcohol and would mix with the water so that the water would not separate from the fuel and freeze in the lines.
E10, the 90 octane fuel you mentioned, already contains alcohol. In addition, lower octane fuel will combust easier which should be an advantage at lower winter temperatures.
