In some cases the balance shaft chain tensioner can come apart and cause the balance shaft chain to skip out of time. I repaired one last week with a broken one. The tensioner has a little plate on the back side of the plunger that holds the spring in. The plate is peened into the tensioner body. When the plate fall out, the spring falls out and the plunger pushes back into the tensioner body causing a very loose chain. On the car I repaired last week, there was no timing chain noise associated with this. The car did have a broken motor mount (cracked rubber and leaking oil), so I thought that was the cause. when I replaced the mount the vibration was still there. It felt like the engine was resting on the subframe and the vibration was worst around 2500 rpm.
Luckily the timing cover on 9-3 sport sedans is fairly easy to remove for inspection (compared with earlier 9-3s, 900, and 9-5s)
