Acknowledge that you may know of what you speak. This is my first Saab. I really wanted to buy back in '95 but instead played it safe with a "high end" Honda Accord (EX, all the options). At the same time I bought a Jeep Cherokee. The Honda lasted until 2006 but was a mess. The Jeep, oddly enough, had far fewer problems and I've still got it. But I finally bought that Saab I wanted.
If I'd bought an Aero and spent $40K I'd probably agree with you. But the 2.0T 9-3 was exactly what I wanted. $30K with everything but the cold weather package and nav (I've got a nice Garmin install in the lower dash tray and it works great and looks good). I bought the overpriced radio upgrade and it is good enough (but should have been half what it cost). 17" alloys. Xenons, fog lights, moon roof, power seats. The 4 cylinder is economical and yet has all the power I need. The "sport" mode is good in traffic and on hills.
The 2008 seems nicer than the 2007 to me. The styling is better. The interior, with the black, looks better. The plastic is still easy to scratch. Put rubber mats in - the provided ones were cheap. .
I went to the BMW dealer and tried to price a car at $30K. The salesman snobbishly informed me that there was nothing available at that price. The only way was used and I test drove a used one. It felt heavy and huge. I suppose the plastics were nicer in the interior - they were softer - but the overall effect was more like driving a boat.
Maybe it won't hold up and then I'll be pissed. Its been great so far. I'm only at 4000mi. We'll see how it is at 60K. But I'm hoping to drive it, like the Honda and the Jeep, for 13 years.
