Based on grinding sound I've been getting for a few weeks and recent postings on this site re: rear brake pad replacement, I visually inspected my rear rotors and what I could see of the pads. Result was inconclusive, so I visited my dealer for a check on my 2006 9-2 Aero.
Here's the news: At approx 35K miles, I have substantial pad remaining -- enough to go at least another 5K before replacement. Turns out Saab rear pads are tapered to help minimize noise, and now the taper is wearing off and brake action is noisier. Also learned that Saab does not recommend turning rotors on recent models. The softer pads conform to the rotor surface. My rotors are lightl scored, giving a kind of "phonograph record" appearance, but it is well within spec, I'm told. Apparently, if rotors are damaged, they are replaced rather than turned.
I also discovered that an intermittant tinny rattle in front braking is caused by gravel intrusion into the brake backing plates. This is a commond problem, the dealer says. I thought the backing plates were sel-cleaning, but apparently not-- at least for certain gravel size.
While we were at it, we did the last (fourth) service under the three-year, 36K limit, and I am back on the road. Total charge: Zero.
Fortunately, we have an excellent dealer here in Central Illinois, and I have been able to rely on responsive, efficient, honest service. During ownership of two 9-3's since 2000, the few charges I've incurred have been well within reasonable limits -- consistent with similar charges for my wife's Accord, for example.
So far, continued excellent results from this car. The Yokohama Ws4 tires, installed at approx 25K to replace the worn OEM Conti's, are performing extremely well in wet, dry, snow, and ice. Fuel consumption with auto trans remains vicinity of 20 mpg under worst conditions, and approaches 30 mpg under optimal highway and weather conditions. I am still a happy camper.
