I looked at the car on Saturday and the transmission had not failed as in not drivable or strange shifting behavior and no fault codes logged in TCM.

The transmission was shifting perfectly during several acceleration tests.
A coolant contamination test revealed only minuscule amounts of coolant which could be a remnant from the earlier radiator repair, and that amount of coolant would probably not do any further damage. Fluid was fairly dark though so I changed it.

It had however the double shift clunk going into D from N and R like some of you might have read about on the 9-5 board.
It hasn't been mentioned so much on this board but it is a fairly common problem on the early Aisin-Warner 5 speed auto transmissions mounted in both Saab's and Volvo's.

Volvo started to use that transmission in 2000 and I have seen several with the same double shift clunk as well as several 9-5 from 2002.

It is a problem within the valve body and solenoids but to go in a replace the valve body is still very costly ($100.00 more for just the part than a complete factory rebuilt transmission from Saab) and with many miles on the transmission and unknown history of fluid changes and/or coolant contamination, I opt for not doing those repairs.

Of the customer cars that have this problem, it doesn't seem to escalate into something more serious so I just let them drive their cars and change the fluid now and then to get as many miles out of them as possible.
