I stopped by my local Import Auto Parts store this morning to get the 6 litres of oil for an upcoming oil change on my wife's 9-3SC. I grabbed a 5-litre jug of Total Quartz Energy 9000 in 0W/30 weight then went to the 1-litre shelf and saw the identical oil was still available in the blue Elf Excellium Full-Tech bottles as well as the newer gray Total bottles.
I grabbed one of the Elf bottles and told the young guy on the register that I would help them out by buying some of their old stock since I knew the oil inside the bottles was identical.
He responded that they had enough of the 1-litre bottles that I could buy six of those if I desired. I like the 5-litre jug, but said "Yeah, but the 5-litre jug is usally cheaper". "No problem, I can match the price for you."
He scanned the 5-litre jug of Total and said "$8.99 per litre". I gulped, rembering when this oil was under $7, and wondered if maybe the Mobil-1 0W/40 at Murray's might be cheaper. Then he scanned the Elf bottle and said "This is weird, it's only $6.95 per litre". Just then the manager walked out of the stock room and said "That's because it is two price increases ago".
I guess you know what I bought! On the drive home I mentioned to my wife that maybe I should have got 12 bottles, enough for the September oil change on her car too.
