Absolute Viscosity versus API Range Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 0W-30 better for short drives with little warmup?, KDS, Mon, 16 Feb 2009 18:01:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
0W/30 and 0W/40 are API identifiers identifying a product falls within a pre-determined range of viscosities. Absolute viscosities are expressed in Centistokes, or Sabolt Seconds Universal, or squared millimeters per second.
Below are the absolute viscosities of three LL-A-025 approved oils at 100 degrees C:
Elf/Total 0W/30 12.18 squared millimeters/sec
Mobil-1 0W/40 14 cSt
Castrol Syntec 0W/30 12.1 squared millimeters/sec
Kinematic viscosity conversion between squared millimeters/sec and cSt is 1:1, meaning we can directly compare the values. Miminal viscosity difference between all of these oils regardless of the API viscosity range.
