I finished replacing the power steering pump on my 2003 last week and wanted to pass on what I discovered regarding the proper fluid to use. The pump replacement was surprisingly easy. I could not find a new pump in stock either on-line or at local dealers. I lucked out and found a pump off a 2007 that had been totaled with only 9000 miles. Cost me $45 vs. $365+ for a new one. As I poured in the first ounce of standard power steering fluid I thought I had better check the owner’s manual for the fluid spec. Sure enough it is special, CHF -11S which is made by Pentosin. It comes in a green metal can. After doing much research it seems that the safe bet is to always use this synthetic fluid and not to mix with other types. It has better low temperature properties than standard PS fluid and seal problems are a risk if mixing different types. CHF-11S is also specified for use by BMW, Mercedes, VW, Audi and Porsche but it is a bit hard to find at auto parts stores. I found it at a NAPA store. AutoZone has been reported to have it but it was not stocked in my area. Note: cost is $20 or more per liter. I found that 2 were adequate to fill and flush the system. It’s been reported that some dealers don’t use it so be careful if any service shop “tops off” fluids. Ask what they use. I flushed the system using the method Justin suggested and all went well.
If you can’t find CHF-11S others that may be similar are Texaco PSF 4634 (may no longer be available) or PS fluid from Febi or Bilstein used by Mercedes.
