You're absolutely right. However, I wouldn't blame Saab. The current state of the company is totally the fault of their parent company GM. GM bought 50% controlling interest in Saab back in 1989 and took over completely 10 years later.
I remember by college buddy's 1980 Saab 900 turbo. What a great car! At the time I had an '81 Audi 4000 5+5 and we decided to swap cars for a test drive. I still remember him laughing his butt off while I kept looking around for where to put the ignition key!
I have a 2000 9-3 convertible that I bought used 6 years ago and we love the car. Last month I purchased a new '08 9-3 Aero Sportcombi XWD from my local dealer (with the current state of GM and Saab only time will tell whether this was a smart move). We love the car (despite the GM parts bin radio and climate controls which are identical to my father-in-law's '09 Chevy Equinox and the crappy GM cheap plastic interior). We drove half a dozen other vehicles including several with a higher sticker price but none of them were as enjoyable to drive. The real incentive for us was the $5K in available rebates we were eligible for which drove the price down from the $43k sticker to a $35K sales price. I don't think even a loyal Saab owner thinks these cars are worth anywhere near what GM wants for them.
I'm keeping my finger's crossed that Saab can successfully break free from GM and go its own way once again but I'm not hopeful as Saab couldn't hold their own in the market 20 years ago and this is not the economy for them attempting to go back out on their own....
