Few people need AWD. I think FWD with snow tires and Stability Control does the trick for traction most of the time. As for handling and performance, AWD will feel nicer, but you probably don't drive on the track very often. Theoretically, AWD will use more fuel, but I think the ratings are the same as the FWD version. All that being said, I would go with the extra warranty, especially when AWD is more complex. At least with 2008 models you get the 5 year / 100 K mile powertrain warranty.
