My 2003 SS has 150,000kms (about 90,000 miles) and is a manual 5 speeed car. Here is the history:
-Squeaky front brakes - warranty
-Seat belt retractor - warranty recall
-Keyfob - warranty recall
-Cracked radiator - warranty
-Zeon headlight sensor - warranty
Outside of warranty I had(or will have to) to deal with:
-Wiper motor on the fritz - bad ground, cost me $100
-Front passenger window regulator needs to be replace - I expect $300
-Rear main oil seal leak - will replace when I do the clutch
You may want to check if it is an early versus late build car. My car was built near the end of model year, so they probably fixed some bugs.
Great car, I love it, never change it for anything. If I wanted the reliability of a toaster and the driving experience of a toaster, I would have bought at Toyoaster. Safety is second to none, even 2003 models. Good luck finding a 2003 year model car with any of the safety features.
One other thing to consider. If you are looking at a BMW, Merc, Acura, chances are insurance rates are higher. I have a relative with an Acura TSX, and insurance rates are 30% higher. Over 10 years, she will pay $3000 more in insurance.
That's alot of repairs.
Find a good mechanic who knows these cars, check all service records.
