I assume the Mastercraft tires were half the price (or less) of the Michelins?
My 2000 9-5 came with Michelin MXV4 Energy tires. Long wearing, high fuel mileage, not that good in wet and snow, so they may have yielded long stopping distances too, although I never noticed. Michelins redesigned this tire years ago and the new MXV is very good.
Even if what the Tire Dealer said about Michelins was true with my tires in 2000, they were still equal or better than their competition. Time marches on and tire performance continues to increase. I would not apply the Tire Dealer's opinion to current Michelin tires
