XWD and high pitch sound from rear

Hello,
I have a new 09 9-3 SC with a 2.0 engine and xwd. It currently has less than 1500km on it. Since I picked it up from the dealership, there has been a high pitch sound from the rear of the car - when I first heard it, it reminded me of a wear indicator for a brake pad rubbing on the rotor.
The sound can only be heard with the windows down on a quiet street. It is not related to the brakes as applying the brakes does not change the sound.
I had my wife drive the car while I jogged along behind it - it only makes the sound at about 10km/hr or faster and it seems to be a bit louder toward the passenger side of the car.
I was hoping the sound would go away after the car was driven a bit but the sound hasnt changed (it has only been 1500km however). As well, my mileage kind of sucks (16mpg on average) but again, the car is still pretty new. I get a new car so rarely I dont really remember how long until the mileage starts to look reasonable.
Any ideas? Are there fluids in the rear differential/transfer case? Are they easy to check? Could this be a wheel bearing noise? Obviously it will get a visit to the dealership at some point but I am not expecting much - they missed the sound before they delivered the car to me.
Thanks.
