I heard some interesting information while I was having the Vredestein's installed on my wife's 9-3SC this morning.

1) Tire Factory sells both Vredestein and Nokian tires. While the Store Manager said the Quatrac 3's are too new for him to form an opinion regarding which All-Weather tire model to recommend to his customers, the guys in the service bays (who perform the free tire rotations) told me their observations are that the Vredestein Quatrac 3 is a longer wearing tire than the Nokian WR-G2.

2) The manager informed me that the Nokian Vativa, an all season light truck tire, is made in the US at a Cooper factory. I didn't check the sidewalls of the display tire to verify this.

3) The manager gave me the first logical explanation for the benefits of using nitrogen in tires. He siad that regular compressed air contains moisture (not a problem in todays 19-degree temps!) and oxygen. these combine with the heat generated by tire use to cause corrosion of aluminum wheels, leading to rim leaks. Since they have started offering Nitrogen to their customers, the number of rim leak repairs has dropped by half - eventhough not all customers elect the Nitrogen! Since tire stores often provide these repairs at zero cost to their customers, it makes sense that tire stores are pushing use of Nitrogen hard. It also explains why some tire stores do not have an upcharge for Nitrogen. I went with the free 78% Nitrogen rather than the upcharge for 100%.
