I have a 9-3 SportCombi with rain-sensing wipers. There is no intermittent setting for the wipers - just the rain sensor, Yes, you need to keep the sensor area near the rear view mirror clear of ice and snow. If road salt gets heavy enough, I would imagine that would interfere also. With regards to why Saab does not have an intermittent feature like other cars, I can say from my own experience that Mazdas are the same way. My wife has a Mazda5 Grand Touring with rain-sensing wipers, and no other intermittent feature. I have not driven the new 9-3 in snow yet, so can't comment on its rain-sensors in snow, but the Mazda sensor seems to rely on snow melting on the windshield over the sensor area before it activates the wipers. Just an observation.
I have not tried muting the radio yet, except during phone calls. I've had the 9-3 only since last Sunday.
