That clicking sound is usually that of a battery will low power. The Bendix gear is being put against the flywheel by the solonoid, but the starter does not have the power to turn the engine over.
You did not include facts about how new the battery is. Assuming that it is original, it has likely given you its best. Three days of sitting was enough to drain it below starting power. After seven years, it owes you nothing.
So, one can change the battery when it choose to strand you, or one can choose the time and place while still mobile. Your choice at this point.
BTW, what kind of message were you expecting from the SID? 'Don't think "worn out battery" is in its vocabulary. The message has already been delivered by the battery and starter.
