Wheel spacers (for 9-5 rims)

Searching around the BB's, I get that the 9-5 wheel has a 49 mm offset, the 9-3SS has 41 mm.
Many have interchanged both ways, w/o problems.
Being an engineer, I have to think that the proper offset is "better", thus I would prefer to get 8mm spacers to put my old 9-5 Aero rims on my 9-3 Aero.
5mm (and 3mm) spacers with hub ring extension (or whatever that is called) are available, but not 8mm. 8mm spacers w/o extension are available (and considerably less $'s). Anybody use them? Does the default hub ring (or whatever that's called) extend through the 8mm far enough to still help support the wheel. I assume its primary function is to center the wheel, and secondary to support?
If I'm really worried about that aspect, I could just go 5mm with extension, say good enough.
thanks
Ed
