I had the same situation on the CV. I cleaned the shaft and inside the knob with some solvent amd then got out some 3M 5200. This is used in marine and other applications and is a tenacious caulk material that sets up overnight and has a lot of adhesive strentgth. It is not runny, but will readily form around the cavities and splines.
Because it utilizes moisture in the air for the cure and there is little opportunity to get that inside the ball, I added a mist of water. A simple blob of 5200 in the knob, make sure the spring and reverse lockout lever is set up right and working freely and then place the knobon the shaft. Nothing to clean up and the knob is absolutely firm. Because the spring wants to push the knob off, I used a few heavy books to keep downward pressure overnight.
