Cliff notes:
When you install new wheels with new TPMS sensors, the system takes a couple days & then it accepts the new sensors correctly. All by itself.
OK, when I first mounted the wheels, it didn't do anything just driving around the block. So I guess 30mph isn't fast enough to get them operating.
Once I had driven a couple miles including a stretch above 45mph, I got the warning about the TPMS system failure. "Contact Service!" I had to clear that message every time I start the engine & drive. After clearing it, the small orange flat-tire warning lamp stayed lit.
That goes on for a couple days. As luck would have it, the first time my wife takes the car (it's her car after all...) she says she never got any warning. So I drive it, sure enough, no warning at all. I figure the TPMS system isn't working but it gives up with the warning. (unadvertized winter-mode?)
So tonight I tested it. I let air out of one tire, down to about 29psi. Sure enough, after the 2nd time I start & drive, I get the real warning "TIRE PRESSURE LOW" and it knows which corner. When I clear that warning, there's an icon remaining in the center of the car with one wheel highlighted (in addition to the flat-tire idiot light). Real cool.
This is a 2009 9.3 sedan FWD.
