I haven't seen any mention here of fuel pump issues with the V6 Aeros yet, and I'm working on one here, thought I'd share and see if any of you have seen this before.
(The V6 Aero uses a returnless fuel delivery system with a pulse-width-modulated fuel pump - you send AC current to the pump, the more current, the faster the pump runs, which increases the fuel pressure. The system does NOT have a physical fuel pressure regulator, it's only the pump being controlled by a separate module, so even thought the code is for fuel press. reg performance, there is no pressure regulator to speak of.)
I'm getting ME9 P0089 on an '06 Aero with the V6 and 6-speed automatic.
The code description is 'Fuel pressure regulator performance' with set criteria being PWM signal must be adjusted +/-25% for more than 5 seconds to achieve requested fuel pressure. Basically the fuel pressure doesn't match what the ECU expects it to do based on how much power it sends to the pump.
I am not getting any codes for mixture problems, pump module failure, misfire, or other. Knock and misfire counters are all zero for a drive cycle.
When the code is set, the car gets sluggish and goes into a limp mode of some fashion, but shutting down the car for a bit and re-starting clears the code (which does not immediately re-set) and then is sometimes fine for several days.
I already followed the procedure in TIS for checking fuel pressure, which involves putting a test guage on the rail and activating the pump through Tech2. There are 10 'steps' of activation and a spec'd pressure output. The first 5 or so steps seemed to match pretty closely to what the expected value was (but a little low), at the higher activations the output is too low.
I'm going to check for corrosion and full contact at the harness and the control module now, but barring that have any of you seen this before?
Was anything causing it other than the pump?
We don't want to replace the pump un-necessarily since this is the first time I've seen this issue, and customers at independents can be a fickle bunch.
Best,
Drew
