Auto makers have the option to cram a car full of doodads (mostly electronic tweaks) and they do it because the people demands it.
Little do the people know that each electronic tweak comes with their own problems and quirks.
Volvo use AW transmissions (almost identical but not quite) just like Saab in most of their cars since early 90s.
In about 2000 with the 5 speed auto, Volvo decided to implement a doodad called shift neutral which meant the transmission went into Neutral when you came to a stop and pressing the brake pedal. This was to save gas since the engine did not have to overcome the torque converter drag.
When letting go of the brake pedal, transmission shifted back to Drive and off you went.
This until that "feature" started to have a split second lag so that you managed to press the gas pedal down before the transmission had shifted back to Drive and you got a jerky acceleration start.
So Volvo had to come out with a software update to remove the excellent (on paper) feature from the TCM.
The stick shift BMW I rented in Sweden last month had a weird doodad thing in that if you popped it into neutral when still moving forward, when you came to a stop, the engine shut off.
When you pressed the clutch pedal down, the engine started right back up without having to touch the start button.
If you came to a stop the normal way by declutching first, the engine stayed running.
Have no clue what that feature was for.
