I have seen people successfully swap radio components without marrying them. You can't swap the EHU main head unit, that has to be married to work, but you can swap the amplifiers, CD changer/single disc player, and ICM display panel and they will function correctly without getting them mated to the car.
What will happen is when you take it for service the technician will get a message warning that 'SOME COMPONENTS NOT ADDED' or something like that, stating that a component was either replaced but not programmed, or has an error. It's possible some functionality may not give you peak performance, but the CD player should work.
Like John said:
1) Put shifter all the way towards the back of the car to '1'
2) Pull out ashtray - grasp underneath it firmly with one hand, and jerk it towards the back of the car - it will snap out.
3) Remove the climate control module, just pry it out gently with a pocket knife/butter knife/implement of choice. Unplug it and set it aside.
4) Remove the CD player/Head unit cluster - you will see the two little metal tabs sprung out to the sides of the cartridge that holds the two pieces - I reach in with one hand and gently pull it outwards and pop one tab loose (push it inwards towards the radio to release the catch) then pop the other one loose, then it should slide freely outwards. Sometimes the little tabs catch on the center console trim.
5) VERY GENTLY disconnect the 3 connectors on the back of the units - the orange paired cables are the fiber optic cables for the data stream for the radio - it is imperitive that you do not bend these very aggressively or handle them in a manner which would make a first date uncomfortable. It's possible to break the optic filament inside.
The single cable (I think it's brown) in the top corner pulls straight out. The other two cluster connectors have little release catches, they are different, you will have to look at them to get them to release - one of them has a little swivel lock that you have to rotate out of the way to release it, I think the upper one.
6) Once it's out then you can unscrew the CD player from the tray and swap in your other one.
7) Putting it back together is super easy, everything just snaps into place, just make sure you line up the mounting rails for the CD/EHU cluster so it lines up right.
Best,
Drew
