AC Compressor Bearings and Bypassing the AC Compressor

Ok here is my story:
I bought a 99' 9-3 a few months ago and have gotten it new breaks, tires, and a battery... and then the other day it starts making a weird sound... think a clicking and a grinding sound. Today on my way to work it started to smoke... which was white and smelled like burnt rubber.
I took it to the only mechanic around here that will touch Saab's and he says its gonna cost $2200 to replace the AC compressor because it has bad bearings and will cause the serpentine belt to break. I found a few threads on bypassing the AC compressor. I am not very mechanical but have a lot of tools and friends, but none with Saab experience.
So a few questions about bypassing the AC compressor:
What should I look out for in terms of damage caused by the smoking?
Any other parts I should replace while I am down there (pulleys, etc???)
Do I need to take any parts out to replace the serp belt?
