The yellow button on the + batt cable is a power disconnect circuit breaker that trips if you get in an accident - it kills power to all the electrical stuff so there isn't anything that could spark and start a fire if there is a fuel leak. There should be continuity between the two posts for everything to work. If it's tripped, pushing the button will re-set it. I have seen a couple of them corroded or broken so they don't conduct correctly though, so make sure yours is OK, that could be the reason of some of your issues if it's tripped.
As for all the issues, that fuse block carries most of the wiring for all the integrated body functions - the connectors are underneath the battery tray, there could potentially be lots of crimped wires in there.
The airbag warning could be because the seatbelt pre-tensioners were tripped, it may be able to be re-set, maybe not, depends on what actually happened, but you will need a SAAB specialty person to direct you.
You might want to start with the link below, there is a listing of mechanics by state on the home page of this site, maybe just go down the list of everyone in New York / Jersey / etc. and talk to someone, see if they're interested or have had this sort of experience and see what they say, you will inevitably stumble on someone who knows what's what.
There was a thread over on S&&b link for someone asking about a tech in NYC a few weeks ago, maybe see what people said in that one?
