Depending on climate 3-4 years seems normal when a good battery is used. The newer 9-3s wont give you a slow crank warning such as older vehicles will to give you a heads up they are on the way out. I recommend to clients to change batteries every three years regardless if they want trouble free starting. The heat here in FL bakes them in summer.
On the other hand, a clients '03 9-3SS ORIGINAL GM battery just died last week. Case date stamped August 2002! I was impressed.
